What is Legends of the Light?

Legends of the Light is a richly illustrated collection of more than 170 short true stories exploring Jewish resilience, creativity and identity across history.

The stories span thousands of years — from biblical leaders to scientists, artists, activists and quiet everyday heroes.

Each story can be read in just a few minutes, making the book perfect for:

  • Bedtime reading
  • Family discussions
  • Classrooms
  • Jewish schools
  • Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts

More Than History

This is not a textbook.

Each story focuses on values:

  • Courage
  • Compassion
  • Responsibility
  • Moral clarity
  • Creativity
  • Standing up for others

The aim is simple: to show children that these values are not abstract ideas – they are lived choices made by real people.

Stories That Pass the Torch

Written by a father, for his own children, every story follows a simple arc:

  1. The challenge
  2. The moment of courage
  3. The light revealed

And each story ends with a short reflection that invites the reader to see themselves as part of the same chain.

Because the story of our people is not finished.

It continues with the next generation.

We did not simply survive.

We built.

We contributed.

We illuminated.

And that is the light this book explores – the spark passed from one generation to the next through the stories of remarkable individuals.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

rabbi halevi: the poet who longed for Zion

Nearly a thousand years ago, Rabbi Yehuda Halevi wrote poetry that captured the soul of the Jewish people.

Living far from the land of Israel, his words expressed a longing that would echo through generations.

“My heart is in the East, and I am at the edge of the West.”

From classic songs to modern Israeli artists, the show connects people to the culture, language and spirit of a nation.

Because sometimes a song can carry history further than words ever could.

gertrude elion: the woman who wouldn’t stop helping

Gertrude Elion faced rejection after rejection simply because she was a woman who wanted to be a scientist.

She refused to give up.

Her groundbreaking medical research led to treatments for leukemia, organ transplants and many other life-saving medicines – helping millions of people around the world live longer and healthier lives.

Persistence can change the course of medicine.

When asked who owned the vaccine, he famously replied:

“Could you patent the sun?”

 Excellent engaging book…

This is a phenomenal book for Jewish children written by an author who really understands how to put historical figures into language that children will understand. The stories are short – 1 page each – and come with 3 questions at the end of each one geared to spark meaningful conversation and thoughts for children to comprehend and think about the values that each historical “hero” represents. It is amazing how Zargel weaves the actual historical actions and stories of the “characters” with the Jewish values they represent inside of the short story to build a model that is easily comprehensible for kids and full of meaning. I would highly recommend this book not only to parents who want something engaging to read with or to their budding young ones, even non-Jewish youth who may be interested in old testament role models, but also to educators from schools, to synagogue Hebrew schools, to youth groups, and church Sunday schools. I’ve never come across a book of this sort in my life, and I’ve seen many. It’s truly one of a kind, written with passion and easily understandable language. Give it a go, you won’t regret it!
