Every book has a beginning.
Not the first chapter, or the introduction, but the real beginning. The moment the spark appears.
For Legends of the Light, that moment didn’t happen in an office or during some carefully planned publishing strategy.
It happened at bedtime. With my children. And a lot of questions.
The Night the Stories Began
Like many Jewish families around the world, the months after 7th October felt like a crushing weight. History suddenly stopped being something in textbooks and became something deeply personal again, something we were living through.
My children were hearing things. At school. Online. In conversations they didn’t fully understand but could still feel.
And like any parent, I wanted to protect them.
But protection doesn’t only mean shielding children from darkness. Sometimes it means showing them where the light is.
So instead of explaining geopolitics, arguments or headlines, I started telling them stories that I remembered from my childhood. Stories about our people. About courage. About resilience. About impossible odds and stubborn hope. Stories about Jews who changed the world.
At first it was just one story. Then another. And another.
Before long, bedtime had turned into a nightly journey through thousands of years of Jewish history.
The Light That Never Went Out
One thing became clear very quickly – Jewish history isn’t just a story of survival. It’s a story of light.
Again and again, in every generation, Jews have found ways to bring light into the world. Through science, music, philosophy, medicine, activism, faith, creativity and courage.
Sometimes that light came from famous figures like Einstein or Golda Meir. Sometimes it came from people few children (and even adults) have ever heard of.
But every story carried the same quiet message:
No matter how dark the world became, someone always chose to light a candle. And then another. And another.
Why It Matters Now
We live in a strange time.
Information is everywhere. Understanding is not.
Jewish identity is often talked about loudly but understood very little. History is distorted or compressed into slogans. And nuance rarely survives the internet.
For Jewish children growing up today, this can create confusion.
Who are we?
Where do we come from?
What do we stand for?
Those questions deserve better answers than arguments on social media.
They deserve stories. Real stories. Stories that show that being Jewish isn’t only about tragedy or survival. It’s about contribution. Creativity. Moral courage. And an unbroken chain stretching back thousands of years.
A Father’s Responsibility
As a father, I realised something important: our children don’t inherit identity automatically. They inherit it through stories.
The stories we tell them shape how they see themselves and their place in the world.
If the only Jewish stories children hear are about persecution, then Jewish identity can feel heavy.
But if they hear stories about scientists, poets, musicians, leaders, athletes, thinkers and ordinary people who did extraordinary things… then Jewish identity becomes something else entirely.
Something vibrant. Something inspiring. Something alive.
That was the heart behind Legends of the Light. Not a history textbook. Just stories. Stories that remind Jewish children that they are part of a remarkable people whose light has travelled across centuries and continents.
The Chain of Light
There’s an old Jewish idea that every generation receives a light from the generation before it. Our responsibility is simple. Keep it burning. And pass it on.
That’s what Legends of the Light is really about. It’s not only about the heroes of the past. It’s about the children reading the stories today. Because one day, they will be the next link in that chain. One day, they will decide how the light continues.
Why I Had to Write It
What began as bedtime stories slowly grew into something much bigger. More stories. More research. More moments where I realised just how extraordinary our history really is.
Eventually, those bedtime stories became a book. Over 170 short stories. Thousands of years.
One simple message: The light of Am Yisrael has never gone out.
Not through exile. Not through persecution. Not through war. Not through time. And it never will.
Because every generation finds a way to carry it forward.
